Why and How Do We Read? What are the Elements? In general, we refer to the components that make up a work of literature as the "elements of literature." They aren't something that an author necessarily "uses"--they exist naturally. These are things such as plot, setting, conflict. A story doesn't exist without these elements, although the author is in control over how they are expressed.
We will also look at some literary techniques, which are things writers do intentionally, such as the use of foreshadowing or suspense. Click the link below to see how understanding these elements and techniques aid readers as they analyze and discuss a text. Or use the navigation button at the top of the page to get started with the elements. You will find text explanations, links to exercises on other websites, and videos to help you learn about the material. |
